According to Father Luke Travers, administrator of the Benedictine Abbey in Richmond, “The monks of Mary Mother of the Church Abbey, are grateful for the actions of Bishop DiLorenzo, for not only does his offer make it possible for us to realize our dream for the second 100 years of Benedictine, but it also means that the campus we leave behind remains at the service of the Church of Richmond and its members.”

Richmond, VA – April 6, 2011 – In a move aimed at strengthening the diocese’s educational presence in the Richmond metro area, Bishop DiLorenzo and the Benedictine Society of Virginia announce today the purchase of the Benedictine High School Sheppard Street campus by the Diocese of Richmond.

The new contract effectively removes the Virginia Museum of Fine Art’s option to buy the property.

According to the Diocese of Richmond, St. Benedict Parish and School, which stand next door to the Sheppard Street campus, will now be able to continue their use of the parking lot and athletic facilities associated with the campus, and will have room for future growth and development as a result of the sale.

“The Diocese of Richmond remains committed to its parishioners and we are happy to keep this piece of property within our family, while supporting the growth of Benedictine High School at their new campus,” says Bishop DiLorenzo. “Essentially, we see this as a win-win situation for the Catholic community.”
