Elite school is sued over priest abuse allegations (Video)

MYFOXNY.COM – Bill Crane and his brother Tom say they were sexually abused by two priests at the elite Delbarton School in Morristown, N.J.

“The days of family containment, secrecy, conspiracy and intimidating victims are over,” Bill Crance said.

“This is an ugly situation,” Tom Crane said. “It has been for quite some time.”

The brothers claim they were preyed upon by Father Luke Travers, a former headmaster, and Father Justin Capato. They say the abuse went on for two years in the 1970s. Now they’re suing the school and St. Mary’s Abbey, which runs the school.

“They knew or reasonably should have known about what was occurring and taken appropriate measures to prevent it,” said Greg Gianforcaro, an attorney.

A spokesperson at St. Mary’s Abbey said it placed restrictions on both priests following the allegations. “This includes continuous monitoring, seclusion from anyone younger than 25, and limitations on celebrating the Eucharist,” the spokesperson said.

But people who know Father Capato, who is currently a priest at Notre Dame of Mt. Carmel Church in Cedar Knolls, don’t believe it.

“He’s a caring, approachable, kind,” said Sister Mary Ellen. “He’s a holy man.”

She wondered if money is the motive. The lawsuit doesn’t say how much they’re suing for.

Father Luke’s attorney said he is upset.

“He denies any inappropriate conduct whatsoever with them,” said Gerard Hanlon. “So he’s distraught.”
