His Eminence Theodore E. Cardinal McCarrick was the honored speaker at Delbarton Commencement 2007 which took place in St. Mary’s Abbey on June 3, 2007. One hundred eighteen members of Delbarton Class of 2007 received their diplomas to the enthusiastic applause of an abbey filled with family and friends. Class valedictorian, Michael O’Donnell, who received the Delbarton Mothers’ Guild Prize as the student who led his class scholastically throughout his years in secondary school, addressed his classmates on the evening of June 1 at the Baccalaureate Dinner.

Many awards were distributed during the graduation ceremony including The Peter B. Haas Award for distinguished leadership within the school to Patrick Coughlin; the James E. Nugent Award for the graduating student who best exemplifies the spirit of giving himelf to others to Ifiok Ingyang and Sumorwuo Zaza; The Michael Patrick Sheridan Award to a senior who has manifested love for life and for the School to Christopher Deming; and the Bryan Bennett Award to the student who distinguished himself for his day to day work ethic, consistent nobility and unfailing kindness to Matthew Delaney.

In his remarks to the graduates Cardinal McCarrick spoke simply and directly as he encouraged them to think ahead, not be afraid to take risks and to understand that reliance on others will be an important aspect of their life experience. Abbot Giles Hayes, O.S.B. gave a stirring tribute to retiring headmaster Rev. Luke Travers, O.S.B. for his eight year tenure as headmaster, and awarded him a Delbarton Medal. The audience affirmed the Abbot’s tribute to Father Luke with a long, heart felt standing ovation.

Light rain forced the post-graduation reception into the gym, but many familes managed to snap pictures of graduates with friends in the formal garden. Delbarton joins their proud families in saluting the quality, character, hard work and brotherhood consistently exhibited by the Class of 2007.
